Max Weiler besuchte die Malschule Toni Kirchmayr in Innsbruck und studierte ab 1930 an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien bei Karl Sterrer, in dessen Meisterschule er 1933 aufgenommen wurde. 1936 beauftragte ihn Clemens Holzmeister, an der künstlerischen Ausgestaltung der Österreich-Kapelle im päpstlichen Pavillon der Weltausstellung in Paris 1937 mitzuarbeiten. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges war Weiler zuerst als Hilfslehrer in Telfs und in Zams bei Landeck tätig, bevor er 1942 von der Deutschen Wehrmacht zum Einsatz in Oberitalien und Jugoslawien eingezogen wurde. 1945 kehrte er nach Gerlos zurück und gewann den Wettbewerb um die Ausführung der Fresken in der Theresienkirche auf der Hungerburg in Innsbruck. 1951 feierte er seine ersten Einzelausstellungen im Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, der Galerie Würthle in Wien und in der Neuen Galerie der Stadt Linz. 1964 erhielt er die Professur für Malerei an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien. 1975 erschien die erste, von Wilfried Skreiner herausgegebene Monografie zu Max Weiler. 1978 fand eine Weiler-Ausstellung in der Graphischen Sammlung der Albertina in Wien statt. Es folgten zahlreiche weitere Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland. In 1936, Clemens Holzmeister commissioned him to work on the artistic design of the Austria Chapel in the papal pavilion at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris. During the Second World War, Weiler first worked as an assistant teacher in Telfs and in Zams near Landeck before he was drafted by the German Wehrmacht in 1942 for deployment in Northern Italy and Yugoslavia. In 1945 he returned to Gerlos and won the competition to create the frescoes in the Theresienkirche on the Hungerburg in Innsbruck. In 1951 he celebrated his first solo exhibitions in the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum, the Würthle Gallery in Vienna and the Neue Galerie in the city of Linz. In 1964 he received the professorship for painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1975 the first monograph on Max Weiler, edited by Wilfried Skreiner, was published. In 1978, a Weiler exhibition took place in the graphic collection of the Albertina in Vienna. Numerous other exhibitions at home and abroad followed.
