Edwin Lawrence Godkin (1831-1902) ír születésű amerikai újságíró, szerkesztő. Ő alaította a The Nation c. lapot, illetve 1883-tól a New York Evening Post főszerkesztője volt. Londonban tanult jogot, majd a Daily News tudósítójaként dolgozott a krími háború idején. 1856-ban vándorolt ki az Egyesült Államokba. Jelen könyv volt az első műve, melynek első kiadása 1853-ban jelent meg New Yorkban. A kötet utolsó harmada a reformkorral ill. a magyar forradalommal foglalkozik.
